The doctor is in.
As I transitioned from my PhD program in computer science to my tattoo apprenticeship, you can say I developed a particular talent for overthinking things.
When I began tattooing in 2016, I assumed I'd eventually find my signature style. But the more I explored different styles and techniques, the more I realized how much there was still to learn. Even as my skills developed, I hesitated to call any one style my specialty. I had too much respect for the craft to consider mastery a finish line. For a while, I mistook that curiosity for a lack of direction.
Eventually, I realized I'd been looking for my style in the wrong place.
What I loved most was getting to know someone, understanding their perspective, and translating their ideas into something uniquely theirs. My approach became less about creating a recognizable aesthetic and more about creating something personal.
Today, I treat every tattoo as a collaboration, bringing together technical precision, thoughtful design, and a perhaps unreasonable attention to detail. I may never settle on one signature style, but I've found something far more fulfilling in helping others bring their own ideas to life.
And I think I prefer it that way.
